Coolio,,the '90s rapper who graced the charts with hits like "Gangsta's Paradise" and "Fantastic Voyage," has died, his friend and manager Jarez Posey aged 59.

Posey said Coolio died Wednesday afternoon local time in Los Angeles.

Details of its initial state are not available.

Los Angeles Fire Department Captain Eric Scott confirmed that firefighters and paramedics responded to calls at block 2900 South Chesapeake Ave. at 4 pm. Local time for emergency medical reports. When they arrived, they found the man unresponsive and attempted resuscitation for "about 45 minutes."

The patient was "declared dead before 5pm," Scott said.

"We are saddened by the loss of our friend and client Coolio, who passed away this afternoon," Coolio's talent manager Sheila Finnegan said in a statement provided to CNN.

According to the biography on his official website, Coolio grew up in Compton, California.

Speaking to the Los Angeles Times in 1994, he remembers getting into the drug world but exiting through a career as a firefighter.

"I'm not looking for a career, I'm looking for a way to be clean - a way to get off drugs," he told the publication. "It was going to kill me and I knew I had to stop. I needed discipline in fire training. We walked every day. I don't drink, I don't smoke and I don't do the things I used to do.


His rap career started in the 1980s and became famous in the underground scene.

"Fantastic Voyage" was the first song that really made him famous.

His possibly greatest song "Gangsta's Paradise" from the movie soundtrack "Dangerous Minds" increased his star power to enormous proportions. He won a Grammy for the song in 1996.

It lives in the streaming era. In July 2022, the song reached the milestone of one billion views on YouTube.

"It's one of those songs that lasts for generations," he said in a recent interview. "I don't use modern words... I think that makes it timeless."
